Note: all instructions that are detailed to Microsoft Word. If you’re using a different word processor, you may have to search for an equivalent setting.
The Basic Principles
An APA paper has four parts:
- The Title Page
- The Abstract
- The Essay
- The Reference List
It’s best to split up each section with a full page break (Insert > Page Break).
The default font is Times New Roman, size 12 (a smaller sized size is fine for footnotes). It’s a serif font if you select any other font, make sure. You could, however, use a font that is sans-serif captions and descriptions in figures and tables.
Since 2007, the default margin for just about any Word document has been 1 inch all around. Fortunately, APA format has got the same requirement. If for a few good reason you need to fix the margins, go to Page Layout > Margins > Normal.
All the text in your essay should really be double-spaced. To help make this change quickly, first press Ctrl + A to highlight all text and then press Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing (symbol) > 2.0. Make certain you also click on “Remove Space After Paragraph.”
